There are three phases to the FA Referee Course

The first is the main course which is completed over 2½ days (normally two Saturdays or Sundays plus one evening session). The vast majority of the course will be practically based with you participating in mock refereeing situations. At the end of these sessions you will be assessed by a senior tutor on whether you are ready to move on to the next stage of refereeing real games.

During the next stage you will referee at least 5 games in a 10 week period. You will be required to submit with your application form seven dates which you can referee over this period. We will inform local leagues of these dates who will then allocate you games. We will also ensure that you are allocated a mentor (an experienced fellow referee) who will offer you support and advice and come a watch at least one of your first five games. During this period you will be a Level T (Trainee Referee).

10 weeks after the main course finishes you will be invited back for a final session where you will sit a written multiple choice “Laws of the Game” knowledge exam. If you pass you will be a fully qualified referee and will be registered as a level 7 (over 16) Level Y (under 16) Referee.

The course is priced at £115 per candidate.
