Recreational Football

Whether you are looking to get fitter, or you are looking to find a way to get back into football, there are plenty of formats and days to play the beautiful game. See our offer of recreational football below.

Wiltshire County FA want to harness and grow recreational football in the County. We understand that due to social and work changes, not everyone can commit to play the traditional 11v11 weekend football. From informal kickabouts to flexible formatted leagues, there are several opportunities to still be involved.

Our Recreational Football Development Officer, Chloe Buller said:

"These playing opportunities are great for those who, for whatever reason might no longer be playing football, or trying it out for the first time. It is great to be able to offer various formats, days and times to play football, for a wide range of age groups. You might be someone like myself, who at 16, dropped out of competitive football for a couple of years due to work commitments. I was after friendly kickabouts and ways to still be involved but just not part of a team, as I couldn't commit. 'Just Play' kickabouts are perfect for that, as they allow you to step back in to the football family without feeling you are torn between personal commitments and playing football. I just wish I knew about this opportunity where I used to live!

We are growing this offer however, to more than just informal kickabouts, with the launch of Flexi-Leagues/FA Elevens and also promoting Small-Sided Football. These are examples of our alternative offer, providing feasible ways to play competitively without feeling like you are over-committing to a long season. It's the best of both worlds for all parties involved."

What is 'Just Play'?

Just Play is an FA initiative and set up to target those who love football, but may no longer be in the game due to work, family or other commitments which refrains them from committing hours to train and play with a team. Just Play offers friendly, informal and social kickabouts for various age groups - whether that's a group of young friends coming to a community venue for an afterschool kickabout, or a group of 30 year-old work colleagues coming together once a week for a game and a catch up. There’s absolutely no commitment, some of our Just Players take part once a month and others play every week.

50+ Walking Football 'Just Play' Sessions

Walking Football for the Over 50's - The game you know and love, at walking pace. There is no running, no overhead height and minimum contact.

The sessions operating around the County are recreational, social, informal and non-committal. Wiltshire Walking Football is a community-like group with around 180 players, all with one thing in common: In their younger years, they LOVED football. Now, they are with other like-minded individuals also in their fifties and beyond, who are able to play the sport they love once again.

The unique aspect of these sessions is that we offer flexibility to those who might be still be working, to those who perhaps want to play more than once a week by letting them attend as many sessions as they like.

If you're interested to join in, please feel free to attend any number of the sessions in operation around the County. We have sessions in, Swindon, Royal Wootton Bassett, Corsham, Calne, Chippenham, Westbury, Trowbridge, Salisbury and Devizes.
Further details of the sessions can be found by visiting our Walking Football page

Small-Sided Football

If 11v11 isn't your thing, Small-Sided Football might just be! Weekly leagues, 30 minute games, usually ran around 10-12 weeks long. Small-Sided Football Leagues offers a competitive alternative to a kickabout - plus the smaller numbers of 5,6,7 a-side means it's easier to round up your mates!

Please click HERE to see a list of our National & Local affiliated providers. In order to join a league, please click on the named league and follow the steps to join a Small-Sided League.

11v11 Flexi-League/FA Elevens

This is a new format of the traditional game, it's 11v11 as you know it - just with some flexibility on traditional aspects to encourage more participation to the adult game. Teams that have entered previously have ranged from already established teams looking for extra fitness, to teams who are group of friends/work colleagues coming together and playing competitive weeknight 11v11 football. The short 15-week 'season' in the Flexi-League is great for teams who might just be after extra training, used as a 'trial' for newly formed adult teams or just for a group of friends who simply don't have the time to commit to typical 35-week long season.

What is the offer to a 'Flexi-League?'

- Weekday evening games
- 3G Pitches, 1 central venue
- Shorter duration matches, 50 or 60 minute games
- Little paperwork & admin
- Flexibility on number of registered players
- 15 week-long 'seasons'
- FA qualified referees
- Divisions of: U21, Open-age Male/Female (16+), Veterans (Over 35's).

If you're interested to join in a Flexi-League, we are accepting expressions of interest. Contact Chloe Buller on 01793 486047 for more information.
